Eight members of Dartford CLP attended the Fabian Society House of Commons Tea in July.
The tea was preceded by a lively debate entitled “How do we change politics – the constitution, the media and the people?”
The speakers were Sadiq Khan MP, Patrick Diamond, Helen Goodman MP, Gregg McClymont MP and Andrew Harrop. The meeting was jointly chaired by Seema Malhotra, Labour’s newest MP following her by-election victory in Feltham & Heston, and Austin Mitchell MP.
They addressed a number of issues including the distribution of power, the collapse of class identification, the pressure created by the 24 hour media culture and predatory capitalism.
There was a tense atmosphere in the Palace of Westminster that afternoon as the Fabian meeting took place on the same day as the Commons debate on changes to the House of Lords, leading to the latest Conservative climb-down.
The meeting was followed by tea in one of the House of Commons dining rooms, which gave Fabian members and supporters a chance to continue the debate over a cup of tea.
The Dartford contingent went home not only with some new ideas, but with three raffle prizes between them!
