How Labour Works

So, you sign up as a member.  What happens now?

Every month there is an all-member meeting, where you will be very welcome. This is open to any member in the Dartford constituency. At the meeting, we discuss matters of policy; hear reports from officers and councillors; occasionally visiting speakers will contribute. There is usually a raffle - fundraising is important. A new member has written her impressions of her first meeting here.

Making Policy.  At certain times, when national policy is being developed, questions will be posed, and the party makes responses to the National Policy Forum. The NPF, in turn, reports to National Conference. Contributions come from Local parties, and individuals; from Trade Unions, and socialist societies such as the Fabians, and from the Cooperative Party which is affiliated to Labour.

Elections.  The party has a duty to contest all elections. We take pride in the fact we have put up a candidate in every district ward (Dartford Borough Council) and county division (Kent County Council); as well as candidates for Westminster and European Parliaments.

During election periods, authority within the party is given to an Agent, who is responsible for complying with the Representation of the Peoples Act. There are strict rules about finances, communications and behaviour which have to be observed by everyone acting on behalf of the party.

Rules.  The party is governed by the Constitution, contained in the National Rule Book. By becoming a member, you commit to supporting the principles and programme of the Party.

Fundraising and Social events.  We hold regular social events: barbecues, quiz nights, dinners. Subscriptions and councillor levies alone aren't enough to fight elections, and to maintain the party premises at Kent Road. There are regular appeals for funds.

Management.  Day to day management is carried out by the Executive Committee (EC), that is elected at the AGM held in October.  They can be contacted at  Here is a list of officers elected at the last AGM: Executive Committee

Communications.  This website is run by a system called Nationbuilder, which also links into social media and membership lists.  There are pages and groups on Facebook, Twitter and Gmail.  Most communication between members and the party happens by email.  The national party also maintains a voter database through a system called Contact Creator.

You'll be very welcome getting involved with any, or all, of these activities.  You've joined a bunch of people who all believe passionately in creating progress in Dartford, in the Country, and in the World. Welcome.
